CHERRYMAE GOLSTON - artist

I was born and raised in Belize, Central America. My family immigrated to California in 1969. I got my B.A. and M.A. in Spanish at the University of California at Berkeley. In 2003 I moved to New York and in 2013 relocated to Albuquerque, NM, where I currently make my home.

My artwork explores my Afro-Caribbean heritage through quilting and ceramics. I create wall-hangings and ceramic pieces with abstract designs and figurative images focusing mainly on the female form. I draw inspiration from the bold patterns and vibrant colors of African and Caribbean decorative arts.

For me, the making process is as fulfilling as the final creation. First, I am inspired by the design on a piece of fabric, a color combination, or the shape of a piece of pottery. Then, I embellish my creation, always taking into consideration my earlier work so as not to be formulaic. When creating my fiber arts, I use a traditional quilting stitches, as well as stones, beads, and shells. My ceramic work, relies on hand painting and carving techniques to provide detail and texture.

Exuberant Woman Elegant Crane - I am forever inspired by the annual Whooping Crane migration that brings these magnificent creatures flying and dancing into the area every year, including the fields near my studio.
